January 27, 2025, Declared Holiday for Muslims
Malacañang has officially announced that January 27, 2025, a Monday, will be a holiday for Muslims in observance of Isra Wal Mi'raj, also known as the Night Journey and Ascension of the Prophet Muhammad. This significant event in Islamic tradition marks the night when Prophet Muhammad ascended to the seven stages of heaven and began a miraculous journey from Mecca to the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.
Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin confirmed on Sunday that the holiday will be specifically observed in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) and other Muslim areas across the Philippines. 'Not a National Holiday, but a Muslim holiday only in BARMM and other Muslim areas defined in the Muslim Code,' Bersamin stated.
He further clarified that Muslims residing in regions where the holiday is not officially observed, such as the National Capital Region, are excused from reporting for work on this day. This ensures that Muslims outside BARMM can also participate in the observance of this important religious event.
Isra Wal Mi'raj holds profound significance in Islam, commemorating the night when Prophet Muhammad experienced a divine journey, ascending through the seven stages of heaven. This event is a cornerstone of Islamic faith, symbolizing spiritual elevation and the connection between the earthly and the divine.
As January 27, 2025, approaches, Muslims in BARMM and other designated areas will prepare to honor this sacred event, reflecting on its spiritual importance and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad. This holiday provides an opportunity for the Muslim community to come together in prayer, reflection, and celebration of their faith.
