SSS Warning on Fake Text Alerts: Protect Your Data
The Social Security System (SSS) has issued a crucial warning to its members and the general public regarding fraudulent text messages. These messages, sent by unscrupulous individuals pretending to be from the SSS, promise recipients an incentive if they click on a provided link.
SSS Senior Vice President for Member Services and Support Group, Normita M. Doctor, revealed that the organization has been receiving reports from members about text alerts related to benefit claims, expiring contribution payments, or My.SSS registration. These alerts urge recipients to click a link, which leads to a phishing site designed to steal personal information such as SS numbers and login credentials from My.SSS accounts.
Doctor emphasized the importance of not clicking on links in these fake text alerts. She explained that members and the public can easily identify a scam text alert by checking its sender. Legitimate SSS messages will come from SSS, and the official SSS website is www.sss.gov.ph. Any message from an unidentified mobile number is likely a scam.
The SSS Special Investigation Department (SID) has already reported these incidents and submitted a Text Scam Complaint to the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to help combat scam text messages. Doctor advised members to avoid sharing their SS number, usernames, passwords, or other login details with scammers to prevent their My.SSS accounts from being compromised.
Victims of these text scams are encouraged to report the incidents to law enforcement authorities such as the Philippine National Police’s Anti-Cybercrime Group and the National Bureau of Investigation’s Cybercrime Division. With the assistance of the SSS SID, victims can aid law enforcement in fighting against text scammers. Reports can be made to SID via email at [email protected] or by calling (02) 89247370.
