A Guide to Good Friday Holiday Pay in the Philippines
Reflecting on Service and Sacrifice This Good Friday
Good Friday is a day of deep solemnity and reflection across the Philippines. It is a time when we remember the ultimate sacrifice made for humanity, a powerful lesson in service and humility. As our nation pauses, it is a moment to reflect on values that transcend our daily lives and can inspire our professional conduct.
For businesses, this period of observance also brings practical responsibilities, particularly in honoring the contributions of their employees. Ensuring fair and correct compensation during Holy Week is a fundamental way to show care and respect, reflecting the spirit of service this season represents.
Understanding Good Friday as a Regular Holiday
In the Philippines, Good Friday is designated as a regular holiday. This has specific implications for employee payroll that every employer must understand to ensure compliance with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). The rules for regular holidays are different from those for special non-working days.
Your Guide to Payroll Computation for Good Friday
To assist our partners and the wider business community, we have outlined the official DOLE guidelines for computing wages on a regular holiday like Good Friday.
For Employees Who Do Not Work If an employee does not report for work, they are still entitled to receive 100 percent of their daily basic wage for that day, provided they were present or on paid leave on the workday immediately preceding the holiday.
For Employees Who Work on Good Friday Should an employee work on this day, they must be paid 200 percent of their regular basic wage for the first eight hours.
For Overtime Work on Good Friday If an employee works beyond the standard eight hours, they are entitled to an additional 30 percent of their hourly rate on that day. The computation is: hourly rate of the basic wage x 200% x 130% x number of overtime hours.
For Work on a Rest Day that is also Good Friday When an employee’s scheduled rest day falls on Good Friday, they shall receive 260 percent of their basic wage for the first eight hours of work. For overtime, they will receive an additional 30 percent of their hourly rate on that day.
