The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, or PhilHealth, has introduced a new benefits package to support children who have undergone kidney transplantation. This initiative, detailed in PhilHealth Circular No. 2025-0011, aims to provide comprehensive post-transplant care and financial assistance to young patients and their families.

The Need for a Comprehensive Post-Transplant Package

Chronic Kidney Disease, or CKD, is a significant health concern in the Philippines, with a prevalence rate of 35.94% , which is higher than global estimates. Kidney transplantation is the best treatment for CKD stage 5 , but patients require long-term care to prevent organ rejection. This new Z Benefits package is designed to address this need, ensuring patients receive the necessary support for a better quality of life and higher survival rates.

What the Z Benefits Package Covers

The benefits package covers a wide range of essential health services for pediatric kidney transplant recipients and their living donors. This includes:

  • Immunosuppressive Medications: To prevent organ rejection, the package covers various combinations of immunosuppressive drugs.

  • Drug Prophylaxis: To prevent infections, the package includes coverage for antiviral and antibacterial medications.

  • Drug Level Monitoring: Regular monitoring of medication levels in the blood is covered to ensure therapeutic effectiveness.

  • Laboratory and Diagnostic Tests: The package includes a comprehensive list of laboratory tests, diagnostic procedures, and even a renal graft biopsy if needed.

  • Living Donor Monitoring: The package also provides for the monitoring of the living kidney donor's health.

  • Infectious Disease Monitoring and Ancillary Services: The package covers monitoring for various infectious diseases and other ancillary services as required.

How to Avail the Z Benefits Package

All Filipinos are automatically covered by the National Health Insurance Program and can avail of this benefits package. To be eligible, patients must meet the selection criteria detailed in the Pre-authorization Checklist and Request Forms. The approved pre-authorization is valid for 180 calendar days.

Contracted health facilities will handle the claims filing directly with PhilHealth; beneficiaries will not need to file claims themselves. There should be no co-payment for the essential health services covered in this package.

This new PhilHealth circular represents a significant step forward in providing accessible and comprehensive healthcare for children with kidney disease in the Philippines. It underscores PhilHealth’s commitment to universal healthcare and ensuring that all Filipinos have the support they need to lead healthy and productive lives.
